ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig)
                         [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records]
Instead of just an excerpt as usual, I played the whole
thing this time. What an incredibly cool tune!

TOASTED HERETIC - Heart Attack [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish]:
     great band from Galway, Ireland
COWBOY MOUTH - Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your
Mind) [MOUTHING OFF/Viceroy Records]: New Orleans
the subdudes - Satisfied [ANNUNCIATION/High Street Records]:
     New Orleans
CORDELIA'S DAD - Texas Rangers [HOW CAN I SLEEP/OKra Records]:

The first three bands in this next set played in a magnificent
festival on Saturday called Revolucion '94, along with solo
Adrian Belew, Mexican bands Santa Sabina and La Castaneda and
 L.A. stalwarts Redd Kross:

MALDITA VECINDAD - Un Poco de Sangre [EL CIRCO/BMG]: Mexico
An exhiliarating, first-class blend of rock, punk, funk,
Mexican traditional, mariachi, reggae, salsa, even rai.
One of the best bands in the world, IMHO.
LIVE - Selling the Drama [THROWING COPPER]: USA ... York, PA
alternative outfit with an incredibly powerful lead singer/
     songwriter, Ed Kowalczyk; brilliant performance.
CAIFANES - Nubes [EL SILENCIO/BMG]: Mexico ... the first of
the Mexican alternative outfits to break through, and the
object of great crowd reverence. Moving lyrics and a very
mystical/charismatic presence by lead singer/lyricist Saul
Hernandez; this album produced by Adrian Belew
NARCISO MARTINEZ - Malagradecida [FATHER OF THE TEXAS-MEXICAN
     CONJUNTO/Arhoolie]: Mexico
THE IGUANAS - Para Donde Vas [THE IGUANAS/Margaritaville-MCA]:

All of the below (except Paul Brady) performed at last weekend's
magnificent San Francisco Celtic Music & Arts Festival:

ALTAN - The Glory Reel/The Heathery Crunch [ISLAND ANGEL/Green
     Linnet]
SHARON SHANNON - Phil Cunningham's Set (The Maids of Mullingar/

MARTIN HAYES - The Morning Star/The Caoilte Mountains [MARTIN
HAYES/Green Linnet] ... he may play in the older, lyrical west

the fire and intensity of Jimi Hendrix ...

CHRIS SMITHER - Rock and Roll Doctor [HAPPIER BLUE/Flying Fish]
MORIS TEPPER - Scratch O'Life [live performance from KCRW's
"Morning Becomes Eclectic"] ... by request. Moris should

 BILLY BRAGG - She's Got a New Spell [WORKER'S PLAYTIME/Elektra]

DAVE EDMUNDS - Crawling from the Wreckage [REPEAT WHEN NECESSARY]

RICHARD THOMPSON - I Can't Wake Up to Save My Life [MIRROR BLUE/
Capitol] ... he's coming to town on Tuesday!!

     excellent folk/roots-rock band
BUMPIN' UGLIES - Weight, Awake [BUMPIN' UGLIES/Red Planet Records]
wonderful local L.A. folk-rockers, heavy on the folk. See them

     haunting and beautiful
CATHERINE-ANN MACPHEE - Hi Ri Ri O Ra Ill O [CANAN NAN GAIDHEAL/
Greentrax]: Scotland ... a bit of "puirt a beul", or mouth
music, from this Hebridean Gaelic singer.

BEN HARPER - Whipping Boy [Aah, dangit, I forgot the new album
title, and it's at the station. Excellent folk-blues singer/
songwriter from the inland part of so. California, and he
plays a mean Weissenborn slide guitar]
 ROBERT PETE WILLIAMS - [I'M BLUE AS A MAN CAN BE/Arhoolie] ...
and I don't doubt he was; this was recorded live at Angola
State Penitentiary in Louisiana in 1959]

PETER OSTROUSHKO & DEAN MAGRAW - Prairie Suite [from a live
performance on "Gumbo" last year; album version on DUO.
      Magnificent.]

And then, a second after this tune ended, we went straight to NPR's
"Morning Edition" ... mighty cool timing, boy! :-)
