 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Opening Theme:
     RON KAVANA - Tralee Trembles [L.I.L.T.: FOR THE CHILDREN/Alias
                                  Records]
     The traditional Irish arrangement of "Soweto Trembles
     (The Jo'burg Jig)", which is my usual theme.  I play this
     one only once a year ... :-)
 THE POGUES - The Sickbed of Cuchulainn [RUM, SODOMY AND THE LASH/
     Rough Trade]
 ALTAN - Tommy Peoples'/The Windmill/Fintan McManus' [ISLAND ANGEL/
     Green Linnet
 TRAIN TO SLIGO - Still Believing [THE DARK AND THE LIGHT]  TtS was
     a great L.A.-based Irish band based around the core of the old
     band Midnight Well:  Thom Moore, Janie Cribbs, Gerry O'Beirne,
     along with L.A. musicians Paulette Gershen, Judy Gameral, and
     a few others.  This terrific song was covered by Mary Black on
     her 2nd most recent album
 FOUR MEN AND A DOG - McFadden's Reels [BARKING MAD/Cross-Border Media]
     but I think it's out on Green Linnet now
 TOASTED HERETIC - Here Comes the New Year [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish]
     Galway's finest ... I'll get these lads signed if it's the last
     thing I do!
 PLANXTY - The Good Ship Kangaroo [AFTER THE BREAK/Tara]  The first
     Planxty song I ever heard, in 1979.  I was hooked from that
     moment on.
 ANDY IRVINE - Never Tire of the Road [RUDE AWAKENING/Green Linnet]
 CHRISTY MOORE - Lisdoonvarna [RIDE ON/WEA Ireland]
 MOVING HEARTS - McBride's [MOVING HEARTS/WEA Ireland-Green Linnet]
 DONAL LUNNY - Across the River / An Fa/inne O/ir [DONAL LUNNY/Gael-Linn]
 LIAM O'FLYNN - Dollard's and the Harlequin Hornpipes [OUT TO AN OTHER
     SIDE/Tara]
 LUKA BLOOM - I Need Love [recorded live on Deirdre O'Donoghue's "SNAP",
     4/26/90, KCRW]  I've heard Luka do this LL Cool J rap ballad
     many times, on tape and live, but I've *never* heard him do it
     as brilliantly and magically as he did at the station that night]
 MARXMAN - Sad Affair (Bodhran Mix) [33 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE/Talkin'
     Loud] Irish-Anglo rap band which includes Donal Lunny's son Oisi/n;
     Donal whacks the bodhran in this mix.  Band samples traditional music
     and album has guest appearances from Davy Spilland & Sine/ad O'Connor
 SCARY EIRE - Lost for Words [single ... another Irish rap band, in
     unabashed Irish accents, talking about Ireland with more trad.
     musical themes
 RADIO NA GAELTACHTA - Theme and introduction to broadcast day ...
     my way of introducing a set of songs in Irish:
 CLANNAD - Na Buachailli/ A/lainn [FUAIM/Shanachie]
 E/INNIU/ - Conamara [E/INNIU/ - Clo/ Iar-Chonnachta] Original songs
     in Irish, mostly in folk/country/folk-rock arrangements.  Nice.
 TOMA/S LYNCH - O/ro/ Se/ Do Bheatha Abhaile [THE CRUX OF THE CATALOGUE/
     Linecheck Records] Solo effort from piper Lynch; he plays guitar
     and sings wonderfully here.  Backup from Ron Kavana, among others.
 LA/ LUGH - Oi/che Fa/ 'Fhe/il Bri/de (On Brigid's Eve) [LA/ LUGH -
     Claddagh] Singing in Irish and English from Eithne Ni/ Uallacha/in
     and Gerry O'Connor (the fiddler, not the banjo player)
 SCARA BRAE - An Ca/ilin/ Rua [SKARA BRAE/Shanachie]
 VAN MORRISON AND THE CHIEFTAINS - Ta/ Mo Chleamhnas De/anta [IRISH
     HEARTBEAT/Mercury]  Kevin Conneff handled the Irish ...
 THE 4 OF US - Man Alive [MAN ALIVE/Columbia UK]  Great soulful, danceable
     rock band from Newry, Co. Down
 THE REVENANTS - Let's Get Falling Down [HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOUR/
     Hunter S. Records]  Dublin band
 TOASTED HERETIC - Galway and Los Angeles [ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RIOT/
     Liquid Records]  Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics.  I love these
     guys.  I gotta get Captain Goatee a copy of this stuff ...
 FATIMA MANSIONS - Something Bad [VALHALLA AVENUE/Kitchenware]  Loud.
     Angry.  Cathal O/ Cochla/in has been described as "one angry Mick"
     my a friend of mine who's inclined to say such things ...
 And now, for something completely different ...
 FRANCES BLACK AND KIERAN GOSS - Time [FRANCES BLACK AND KIERAN GOSS/
     Cross-Border Media]  but soon out on Shanachie.  Mary's sister,
     plus singer/songwriter/guitarist Goss.  Gorgeous stuff; this one
     a Charlie McGettigan song
 MARY BLACK - Bright Blue Rose [BABES IN THE WOOD/Dara]  sweet Jimmy
     MacCarthy song
 DOLORES KEANE - Storm in my Heart [SOLID GROUND/Shanachie]
 RELATIVITY - When Barney Flew Over the Hills [RELATIVITY/Green Linnet]
     can't have an Irish show without Tri/ona Ni/ Dhomhnaill!
 BLACK 47 - James Connolly [FIRE OF FREEDOM/SBK Records]
 JIMMY MacCARTHY - Missing You [SONG OF THE SINGING HORSEMAN/Mulligan]
 ANDY WHITE - James Joyce's Grave [OUT THERE/WEA Ireland]  One of my
     favorite Irish singer/songwriters, from Belfast
 THE BIG GERANIUMS - Home Again [TALL TALES ... AND SHORT STORIES/
     Polydor Ireland]  Sweet folk/rock from Donegal, co-produced by
     Donal Lunny
 SHARON SHANNON - Glentown [SHARON SHANNON/Solid (Ireland), Philo (US)]
 MUSICIANS AT MATT MOLLOY'S PUB - Jackie Coleman's/Pigtown [MUSIC AT
     MATT MOLLOY'S/Real World]  One of the best albums of live Irish
     pub sessions ever recorded
 SEA/N SMYTH - The Soweto Slides [THE BLUE FIDDLE/Mulligan]  Terrific
     young fiddler, who incidentally was at Molloy's the nights the
     above was recorded.  Lots of nifty percussion and non-traditional
     arrangements of very traditional playing and tunes.  Wonderful.
 DAVY SPILLANE - Litton Lane [OUT OF THE AIR/Tara]  For the first time
     anywhere, blues on the pipes, with slide guitar and harmonica to
     boot.
 THE BOTHY BAND - Leitrim Fancy/Round the World for Sport/Rip the Calico/
     Martin Wynne's/The Enchanted Lady/The Holy Land [OUT OF THE WIND
     INTO THE SUN/Green Linnet]  IMHO, perhaps the most intense set
     of Irish tunes ever recorded.  Fiery.  One can't help but scream.
 SOMETHING HAPPENS - Hello Hello Hello Hello Hello [STUCK TOGETHER WITH
     GOD'S GLUE/Chrysalis]  excellent and fun Dublin band
 THE FRAMES - Right Road Wrong Road [ANOTHER LOVE SONG/Island]  The
     pride of Dublin ... mighty fine band let by Glen Hansard, who
     was guitarist of The Commitments
 TOASTED HERETIC - Galway Bay [ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RIOT/Liquid]
     Not the hoary old ballad, no indeed.  Nice to end the show on a
     musically pretty and lyrically filthy note!
