THE IGUANAS - Late at Night [THE IGUANAS/Margaritaville Records]
Aieee! Roots-rock doesn't get any better than this. They were
*brilliant* at the Alligator Lounge on Friday. New album
NUEVO BOOGALOO out in late May.
the subdudes - Angel To Be [ANNUNCIATION/High Street Records]
DR. JOHN - Witchy Red [TELEVISION/MCA]
THE POGUES - Train Kept Rolling On [ONCE UPON A TIME ep] B-side
from single from WAITING FOR HERB ... I see them tomorrow!
TOASTED HERETIC - Here Comes the New Year [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/

THE WILD COLONIALS - Spark [FRUIT OF LIFE/Geffen] Beautiful folk-
     rock from L.A. outfit.
KITCHENS OF DISTINCTION - Breathing Fear [recorded live on "Gumbo",
10-22-92, in an extremely rare acoustic performance; an achingly
gorgeous song about homophobia and intolerance]
LISA MEDNICK - A Different Sky [ARTIFACTS OF LIFE/DejaDisc] Texas
singer/songwriter; terrific. Produced and lots of guitar work
by Greg Leisz, plus folx like Adam Sultan, Kenny Blevins, et al.

SANTIAGO JIMENEZ, JR. - Felipe Blanco [CANCIONES DE MI PADRE/Watermelon]
A whole album of songs by his daddy, Don Santiago Jimenez; vocals,
accordion, upright bass and bajo sexto.

Fish] Group performs a wide range of Latin styles, this one from
Nicaraguan singer/songwriter Luis Enrique Mejia Godoy.
MALDITA VECINDAD - Kumbala [EL CIRCO/BMG] The slowest and prettiest
     song on the album.
LOS FOLKLORISTAS - Son el Perdon [MEXICO!/Flying Fish]

CHRISTY MOORE - Sodom & Begorrah [KING PUCK/Newberry-Sony] The latest
from the Owld Hoor ... no plans yet for US release, unfortunately.
 PATRICK STREET - Jenny Picking Cockles/An Gabhran/Jack Keane's Reel
[NO. 2 PATRICK STREET/Green Linnet] LOVE that elecric guitar
     picking from Arty!
LUKA BLOOM - The Fertile Rock [THE SOUND OF STONE: ARTISTS FOR
MULLAGHMORE/Bag Records] Compilation to benefit the Burren Action
Committee; Luka's song decries the destruction of the Irish
environment by those who would seek to exploit it. I'm hoping
it'll be on his new album in May.
EOIN DUIGNAN - Fa/g i mo Dhiaidh E/ & Ar Aghaidh Leis an Obair
     [COUMINEOL/Gael-Linn] Excellent piper/low whistler/composer from

     that I shined last week.
DRAIOCHT - Bla/ithi/n [DRUID AND THE DREAMER/Shanachie] Recently
licensed from Cross-Border Media. Wonderful, ethereal blend of
Irish trad., songwriting and touches of global rhythms.
THE SAW DOCTORS - I Useta Lover [IF THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL, I WANT
MY OLD JOB BACK/Solid Records] I believe this is the largest
selling single in Irish history, singing about, among other
things, the joys of kneeling at the communion rail and leering
at the arses of the young ladies as they go up to receive ...
SEAMUS EGAN - Charlestown/The Mason's Apron [MASTERS OF THE BANJO/
Arhoolie] from the Traditional Banjo Styles tour; accompanied

     WHO!/Rounder]
TRACY SCHWARZ CAJUN TRIO - Je Suis Orphelin [TRACY SCHWARZ CAJUN TRIO/

     friend Dewey's best.
ISOM J. FONTENOT - T'en As Eu, T'en Auras Plus [FOLKSONGS OF THE
LOUISIANA ACADIANS/Arhoolie-Folklyric] FINALLY rereleased on CD
(and my LP is an baaaad shape), these are field recordings done
by Dr. Harry Oster in the '50s. Isom played accordion licks
     on the harmonica; pretty rare.

BLOOD ORANGES - Halfway 'Round the World [THE CRYING TREE/East Side
     Digital]
UNCLE TUPELO - Fifteen Keys (live) [THE LONG CUT PLUS FIVE LIVE/Sire-
     Reprise]
THE OYSTER BAND - Cry Cry [HOLY BANDITS/Ryko]
THE MOVIE STARS - Misconceptions [HECK-OLA!/Lucky Pierre] Three very
strong singers/songwriters, electric and acoustic guitars, a girl
standup bass player (incredibly cool!), bouzouki, pedal steel, Cajun
*and* Tex-Mex accordions, mandolin and harmonica, playing folk-rock-
     country-Cajun-polka-Norteno-chicken scratch ... God how I miss
     this band.

 THE UKRAINIANS - Vorony [VORONY/Green Linnet-Xenophile] FINALLY
     licensed for US (of course, after I pay $22 for the import);
members of UK alternative band The Wedding Present playing mostly
original songs/tunes in Ukrainian trad. style with rock energy,
plus translating Smiths and Velvet Underground songs into
     Ukrainian!
UKRAINSKA SELSKA ORKESTRA - Dowbush Kozak [UKRAINIAN VILLAGE MUSIC/
     Arhoolie] from the 1920s-30s
PETER OSTROUSHKO - The Too-Tight Polka [DOWN THE STREETS OF MY OLD
     NEIGHBORHOOD/Rounder]
KUKURUZA - Stradaniya [CROSSING BORDERS/Sugar Hill] Russian band

KILLBILLY - Shame the Devil [FOGGY MOUNTAIN ANARCHY/CCR] Perhaps
     the world's only punk-bluegrass band?
KEVN KINNEY - Shindig With the Lord [DOWN OUT LAW/Mammoth]

I was getting *really* tired by this time, so things got loud ...
 SUGAR - Helpless [COPPER BLUE/Ryko]
 GREEN DAY - Burnout [DOOKIE/Sire-Reprise
UNCLE GREEN - I Don't Wanna Know About It [BOOK OF BAD THOUGHTS/
Atlantic] Criminally undernoticed rock band ...
THAT DOG - Westside Angst [THAT DOG/Geffen] Tight three-part female
harmonies, sweet violin, dissonant guitars and clever lyrics
from two of Charlie Haden's daughters and pals.
THE HOLY TOLEDOS - Not to Say [BLOOD/Tristar Music] Engaging
folkish-rock from very young New Zealand band.

TOASTED HERETIC - An Enormous Request [ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RIOT/
Liquid Records] Beautiful song! Unfortunately, the last 30
seconds were clipped by Bob Edwards ...
