 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Opening Theme:
     ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig)
                         [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records]
 The first set was inspired by a terrific concert I saw in San Diego
 last Friday ... Beausoleil opening for Los Lobos.
 BEAUSOLEIL - Le Chanky-Chank Francais [CAJUN CONJA/Rhino-Forward]
 LOS LOBOS - The Giving Tree [THE NEIGHBORHOOD/Slash]  David Hidalgo on
     Cajun accordion, and in San Diego on Friday Michael Doucet sat in on
     fiddle.
 THE BLASTERS - Marie, Marie [THE BLASTERS COLLECTION/Slash]  Hadn't heard
     this one in a while, and was Los Lobos' second encore on Friday.
 THE IGUANAS - Angel [NUEVO BOOGALOO/Margaritaville-MCA]  Terrific
     songwriting emerging from this band; Rod Hodges wrote and sang this one.
 LOS LOBOS - Peace [RARE ON AIR, VOLUME 1/Mammoth]  It was nice hearing this
     at the show, so hence this, recorded live at KCRW in August 1993.
 THE BLUERUNNERS - Burn Up the Night [THE CHATEAU CHUCK/Monkey Hill]
 TOASTED HERETIC - Don't Tell Me We Don't Live [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish]
     by request.
 COLORBLIND JAMES EXPERIENCE - Buster Cornelius [WHY SHOULD I STAND UP?/
     Cooking Vinyl]  Unique and almost indescribable.  Colorblind James
     speaking, singing, and playing his xylophone ...
 ANDY WHITE - Six String Street (30 mph) [HIMSELF/Cooking Vinyl]  Belfast
     singer-songwriter's second most recent.  He's got a new one out, and I'll
     get it as soon as I can afford it ...
 DOC & MERLE WATSON - Bonaparte's Retreat [THEN AND NOW/Sugar Hill]
     Re-release.
 SHARON SHANNON BAND - The Pup Jig [THE SOUND OF STONE: ARTISTS FOR
     MULLAGHMORE/Bag Records]  Live track from the benefit CD to help preserve
     Mullaghmore mountain in Clare.
 THE WILD MAGNOLIAS - We're Gonna Party [THEY CALL US WILD/PolyGram]
 THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Amazing Grace [LIVE ON PLANET EARTH/A&M]
 CRESCENT CITY GOLD - Junco Partner [THE ULTIMATE SESSION/High Street]  with
     Allan Toussaint, Dr. John, Alvin "Red" Tyler, Lee Allen, Edward White,
     et al.
 For the 1am feature, here's a set of music from some of the artists who played
 this weekend at the Annual Southern California Cajun & Zydeco Festival:
 STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - Bosco Stomp/Zarico est pas sale [LIVE!/
     Rounder]  by request.
 WALTER MOUTON & THE SCOTT PLAYBOYS - J'etais au bal [J'AI ETE AU BAL: ORIGINAL
     SOUNDTRACK/Arhoolie]  *Extremely* rare West Coast appearance by this
     locally popular Cajun musician who rarely leaves Louisiana.
 D. L. MENARD, EDDIE LEJEUNE & KEN SMITH - Elle Savit Pas J'etais Marie (She
     Didn't Know I Was Married) [LE TRIO CADIEN/Rounder]
 NATHAN & THE ZYDECO CHA-CHAS - Hey Maman [FOLLOW ME CHICKEN/Rounder]
 TEXAS TORNADOS - Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone? [ZONE OF OUR OWN/Reprise]
     by request.
 FELIX y PEDRO ROCHA - La Gardenia [SAN ANTONIO CONJUNTOS OF THE 1950s/
     Arhoolie]
 SOULHAT - Brian's Waltz [OUTDEBOX/Epic]  Sweet waltz on this first major-label
     release from Austin roots-rockers
 VIGILANTES OF LOVE - Resume [WELCOME TO STRUGGLEVILLE/Capricorn]  Athens,
     GA roots-rock outfit.
 PROFESSOR LONGHAIR - Tipitina [ROCK AND ROLL GUMBO/Dancing Cat]  by request.
 ARMAND ST. MARTIN - Back in New Orleans [ALLIGATOR BALL/Patty Lee Records]
     L. A. based Louisiana transplant, with his band the Creole Liberation
     Front.
 TRIBE NUNZIO - How Long? [TRIBE NUNZIO]  Swampy, quietly funky band from New
     Orleans; self-released.  This track and others featuring Joe Cabral
     and Derek Huston of The Iguanas on saxes.
 TERRY EVANS - Honey Boy [BLUES FOR THOUGHT/Pointblank-Charisma]  with
     Ry Cooder on guitars.
 CELTAS CORTOS - Ya Esta Bien! [CUENTAME UN CUENTOS/Sony Discos]  Celtic folk-
     rock outfit from Galicia in Spain, with a raucous Pogue-like feel.
     Great fun; their name means "The Short Celts".
 THE BOTHY BAND - Kerry Slides: The Priest/Mary Willie's/This Is My Love, Do
     You Like Her? [OUT OF THE WIND INTO THE SUN/Green Linnet]
 EINNIU - Laetha a Bhi/ [EINNIU/Clo Iar-Chonnachta]  Contemporary, newly-
     composed folk, folk-rock and country-folk in the Irish language; from
     Connemara, the Irish-speaking region of Galway.
 THE SAW DOCTORS - Pied Piper [ALL THE WAY FROM TUAM/Solid Records]
 3 MUSTAPHAS 3 - Trois Fois Trois (Country Version, 3x3) [HEART OF UNCLE/Ryko]
     Wonderful weirdness from Szegerely.  Forward in all directions!
 BRAVE OLD WORLD - Oy, Di Dreydlekh [BEYOND THE PALE/Rounder]
 INGRID KARKLINS - Ligo [ANIMA MUNDI/Green Linnet]  Latvian and modern
     folksong with a funky edge; excellent stuff.
 SHEILA CHANDRA - Speaking in Tongues IV [THE ZEN KISS/RealWorld]  Fourth
     in her series of explorations of the percussion language of India.
 People kept calling in to request New Orleans music when I wanted to go
 in a different direction, so I got a little weird here ...
 JAMES "SUGARBOY" CRAWFORD - Jockamo [NEW ORLEANS RHYTHM & BLUES,
     VOLUME 1/Rhino]  by request.  Somebody wanted a "rollicking" version
     of "Iko Iko", so I suggested the first version ever recorded, under
     this title.
 OS PARALAMAS DO SUCESSO - A Dama E O Vagabundo [SELVAGEM?/EMI Brasil]
     Reggae-influenced roots-rock from Sao Paulo.  This band caused quite
     a stir by being the first popular group to address the myriad social
     problems of Brasil.
 NAPOLEON STRICKLAND & THE COMO DRUM BAND - Oh Baby [BLOW MY BLUES
     AWAY: MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUES IN THE 1960s, VOLUME 1/Arhoolie]
     A fife-and-drum blues band, which sound more African than African-
     American.  Incredibly neat stuff.
 HUUN-HUUR-TU - Khoomei [60 HORSES IN MY HERD/Shanachie]  Overtone
     "throat singing" from the central Asian republic of Tuva.  This singer
     had three different notes going on simultaneously:  a drone, a main
     melody, and a high harmonic an octave and a fifth above.  Stunning.
 CHERYL WHEELER - Driving Home [DRIVING HOME/Philo]
 RICHARD THOMPSON - Come Easy [EASY THERE, STEADY NOW CD single]
     live B-side.
 ROB WASSERMAN - Spike's Bulls [TRIOS/MCA]
