CHICAGO RHYTHM & BLUES KINGS - Wallflower Boogie [CHICAGO RHYTHM & BLUES KINGS/Blind Pig] ELMORE JAMES - Dust My Broom [THE VERY BEST OF ELMORE JAMES/Rhino] BEAUSOLEIL - Pierrot Grouillette et Mamselle Josette [LOOKING BACK LIVE/Rhino] JOHN FAULKNER - Je Suis Orphelin (The Orphan's Waltz)/Two-Step Too [NOMADS (FÁNAITHE)/Cló Iar-Chonnachta] A classic Cajun waltz as performed by a Scottish singer backed up by a group of Irish musicians, who also composed the second tune. What I once heard someone call "Scojun music". :-) PAUL BRADY - The Lakes of Pontchartrain [WELCOME HERE KIND STRANGER/Mulligan] Yeah, I know you've all undoubtedly heard this song a million times, but Paul does a great version and besides, it worked in the set. (Didn't it?) DWIGHT DILLER - Muskrat [NEW PLOWED GROUND/Yew Pine Mountain Music] Dwight on gourd banjo (f#ADAD) and vocals, Peter Irvine of Cordelia's Dad on bones, and a tune learned from the Hammons family. NORTHAMPTON HARMONY and CORDELIA'S DAD - Bright Morning Star [NEW PLOWED GROUND] Unaccompanied harmony singing in the shape-note style. MELVIN WINE - Lady's Waist Ribbon [COLD FROSTY MORNING/Poplar] Elder statesman of West Virginia fiddlers. JODY STECHER - Wild Bill Jones [GOING UP THE MOUNTAIN/Acoustic Disc] A re-release of one of Jody's first recordings, from 1977. DONAL LUNNY - April the 3rd [JOURNEY: THE BEST OF DONAL LUNNY/ Rounder-Hummingbird] The theme song from the BBC/RTÉ series "Bringing It All Back Home", which traced the Irish music diaspora to America, Canada and elsewhere, how it influened the music there and was influenced, and bringing it all back home again. Written and arranged by Donal, with himself on bouzouki and including Dave "The Edge" Evans of U2 on electric guitar. KARAN CASEY - The Song of Wandering Aengus [SONGLINES/Shanachie] The former lead singer of Solas in her first solo effort. Written by William Butler Yeats in 1899 and later set to music. KÍLA - Tickelled [MIND THE GAP/Kíla Records] Three original tunes - "Tickle Test, "Trickle" and "Tochas", with a set title that seems to me to be a play on the name of Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell (just a guess). RALPH STANLEY - I Hear A Choo-Choo Coming [LIVE AT McCLURE/Rebel] RALPH STANLEY - Rose Conley [SHORT LIFE OF TROUBLE: SONGS OF GRAYSON AND WHITTER/Rebel] RALPH STANLEY & THE CLINCH MOUNTAIN BOYS with GILLIAN WELCH & DAVID RAWLINGS - Gold Watch and Chain [CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY/ Rebel] Dr. Stanley and his band are playing tomorrow night at McCabe's. Guess who forgot to get tickets. The shows are now sold out. Excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall... MICHAEL DOUCET - Grand Mamou [BEAU SOLO/Arhoolie] BeauSoleil played this at the House of Blues last Saturday; it's one of the most beautiful melodies in Cajun music. I was inspired to dig up this beautiful intrumental version, just Mike on fiddle with his brother David accompanying on guitar. LOUIS ARMSTRONG'S HOT FIVE - Big Butter and Egg Man from the West [HOT FIVES AND SEVENS/JSP Records] Recorded in Chicago in 1926. Then, we gave away tickets to Nicholas Payton's Louis Armstrong Centennial Party at UCLA's Royce Hall on Thursday ... congratulations to the winners! [WRITER'S ALMANAC, with Garrison Keillor] LIGHTNING HOPKINS - Hurricanes Carla and Esther [PO' LIGHTNIN'/Arhoolie] ZACHARY RICHARD - Réveille [COEUR FIDÈLE/Audiogram] A remake of one of his most gripping songs, a tale of the cruelty and brutality of the Acadian expulsion. REBECCA KING JONES - Wake, O Wake, You Drowsy Sleeper LEE MONROE PRESNELL - Johnny, You Are My Darling [NOTHING SEEMS BETTER TO ME: THE MUSIC OF FRANK PROFFITT AND NORTH CAROLINA, THE WARNER COLLECTION VOLUME II/Appleseed] NICKEL CREEK - When You Come Back Down [NICKEL CREEK/Sugar Hill] A song written by Tim O'Brien and Danny O'Keefe. SALAMANDER CROSSING - Trip Me Up [HENRY STREET: A RETROSPECTIVE/ Signature Sounds]
