JOSEPH "BÉBÉ" CARRIÈRE - Les Blues á Bébé
[LA LA - LOUISIANA BLACK FRENCH MUSIC/Maison de Soul LP]
BEAUSOLEIL - Les Blues á Bébé [DÉJÀ VU/Swallow]
In memory of Bébé Carrière, Creole fiddler from
	Lawtell, Louisiana, 1908-2001.

ANDERS OSBORNE - Stuck On My Baby [ASH WEDNESDAY BLUES/Shanachie]
The greatest import from Sweden every to hit New Orleans, from
his new album that's threatening to become my favorite of 2001.
AARON NEVILLE - I Shall Be Released [DEVOTION/Tellit Records]
From his well-received all-gospel album of last year. Happy 60th
	birthday, Bob Dylan!
SPENCER BOHREN - Samson and Delilah [CARRY THE WORD/Zephyr Records]
All gospel, all acoustic, all amazing; latest release from the
	New Orleans-settled American roots/bluesman.
KERMIT RUFFINS - Drop Me Off In New Orleans [1533 ST. PHILIP STREET/
	Basin Street Records]
Some second line struttin' with an original composition from
Kermit's brand-new release, which is SMOKIN'!

BOOZOO CHAVIS - Worried Life Blues/Oh Bye Bye/Farewell [LIVE! AT THE HABIBI
	TEMPLE, LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA/Rounder]
In memory of Boozoo Chavis, zydeco pioneer, from Lake Charles,
	Louisiana, 1931-2001.
D. L. MENARD - Le son de la nuit (The Sound of the Night) [CAJUN MEMORIES/
	Swallow Records]
In memory of Louella Menard, songwriter, chair-maker and wife,
from Erath, Louisiana, 1938-2001. Louella wrote this one for D. L.'s
most recent album, and the way it start'll just make you cry:
"Night has fallen, my wife is gone / Gone to visit and see her family /
I'm all alone feeling lonesome / I'm listening to the sound of the night."
DEWEY BALFA, MARC SAVOY & D. L. MENARD - En Bas Du Chêne Vert
(Under the Green Oak Tree) [EN BAS DU CHÊNE VERT/Arhoolie]
This is one of D. L.'s classics, co-written by Louella, from one
of the finest albums of Cajun music ever recorded.

SONNY LANDRETH - Levee Town [LEVEE TOWN/Sugar Hill]
Man alive ... Sonny's set at the Jazz and Heritage Festival was
mind-blowing. This man deserves to be a lot more famous than he is,
so do your part by getting this record (and all of his others, for
that matter) and telling everyone you know how great he is. And
it goes without saying ... if you have a chance to see him anywhere,
	GO!
LA BANDE FEUFOLLET - Fier d'être Cadien (Proud to be Cajun)
	[BELLE LOUISIANE/Feufollet Records]
A monstrously talented group of young musicians from Acadiana,

HAZEL DICKENS & ALICE GERRARD - A Tiny Broken Heart [NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL:
	BEST OF BLUEGRASS, 1959-1966/Vanguard]
From a new 3-CD set, put together by my pal Fred Jasper, which I
hope will be the first of many.
DRY BRANCH FIRE SQUAD - Black Lung [HAND HEWN/Rounder]
A song by Hazel Dickens, sung a cappella from the Squad's latest.
FROG HOLLER - Choose a Path [IDIOTS/Record Cellar]
Number three (I think) and brand new, another great batch of
songs from the pride of Shoemakersville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
CHARLIE ROBISON - The Preacher [STEP RIGHT UP/Sony]
THE BLUERUNNERS - On and On [LE GRAND BLEU/Louisiana Red Hot Records]
They keep goin' on, and this one's another winner. Described as
a "Cajun garage band", which works for me. This track is one
	of the few in English.

	[WRITER'S ALMANAC, with Garrison Keillor]

THE CALIFORNIA CAJUN ORCHESTRA - Lafayette Two-Step ['NONC ADAM TWO-STEP/
	Arhoolie]
In memory of Danny Poullard, Creole accordionist, born near
Eunice, Louisiana, resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for
over 35 years, 1937-2001. Danny sang lead on this track, a
Cajun classic which was the first Cajun song ever recorded.
DON VAPPIE AND THE CREOLE JAZZ SERENADERS - Creole Blues [CREOLE BLUES/Vappielle Records]
Sung in Creole French, this one goes back to the earliest days
of jazz. Don Vappie and his band are one of my very favorite
traditional jazz bands. Hear him spin some great records
along with his wife Millie, every Tuesday morning from 9-11am
	Central/7-9am Pacific, on WWOZ 90.7 FM, http://www.wwoz.org/
NICHOLAS PAYTON with DR. JOHN - Mack the Knife [DEAR LOUIS/Verve]
From Nicholas' brand new record, a tribute to the great
Louis Armstrong, featuring many of Louis' best songs and tunes
as interpreted by N.P. Mac Rebennack lent guest vocals to
	this track.
LITTLE JIMMY SCOTT - Everybody's Somebody's Fool [LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS/Specialty]
Poor quality recording but amazing performance by Scott with the
Paul Gayten Orchestra at Rip's Playhouse, 1951. Jimmy turned everyone
into weeping puddles of tapioca from his knockout Jazzfest performance
	a few weeks ago.

THE RADIATORS - You Can't Keep No Secrets From The Holy Ghost [THE RADIATORS/
	Rattlesby Records]
Brand-new from the purveyors of Fish Head Music since 1978, and
quite possibly their finest studio album to date.
