TIM ERIKSEN - Farewell to Old Bedford [TIM ERIKSEN/Appleseed] The stunning, "intensely good" new solo album by the lead singer of Cordelia's Dad. This one's from the Warner Collection, learned from the singing of Lee Monroe Presnell of Beech Mountain, North Carolina JEAN CARIGNAN - Hanged Man's Reel [FRENCH-CANADIAN, IRISH AND SCOTTISH FIDDLE TUNES/Legacy Int'l] One of my very favorite French-Canadian tunes, which I first heard played by Peter Ostroushko and Johnny Gimble. Carignan is one of the greats of Québecois fiddling. FROG HOLLER - Pennsylvania [IDIOTS/Record Cellar] The first (and only) country song I know of that's about being Pennsylvania Dutch. THE COUNTRY GENTLEMEN - John Hardy [ON THE ROAD (AND MORE)/Smithsonian-Folkways] THE FLATLANDERS - Stars In My Life [MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND/Rounder] THE OLD 97S - Question [SATELLITE RIDES/ELektra] THE GOURDS - Plaid Coat [STADIUM BLITZER/Sugar Hill] ANDERS OSBORNE - Soul Livin' [ASH WEDNESDAY BLUES/Shanachie] Another track from one of my very favorite records of the year so far, with guest vocals by Davell Crawford and Jonny Lang WALTER "WOLFMAN" WASHINGTON AND THE ROADMASTERS - Funk Is In The House [WWOZ ON CD: THE SOUNDS OF NEW ORLEANS, VOL. 15/Friends of WWOZ] From 'OZ's most recent fundraiser CD, a live recording from the 2000 French Quarter Festival. SUNPIE - Lah Lah Song [SUNPIE/Louisiana Red Hot] Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes' amazing new album blends Louisiana zydeco, blues and funk with Caribbean and West African sounds for a unique blend Sunpie calls "bouje bouje", or "music that moves". Great, great stuff. COOKIE AND THE CUPCAKES - Mathilda [SWAMP GOLD, VOL. 1/Jin] A classic of Louisiana swamp-pop. FILÉ - Johnny Ma Cabrille [HANG ON TO OUR CHAPEAU!/CajunCreole] From their latest, their rendition of a song by the late Boozoo Chavis. LA BANDE FEUFOLLET - McGee's Medley [BELLE LOUISIANE/Feufollet Music] Two fiddle tunes from the great Dennis McGee, dean of Cajun fiddlers, performed by this ever-amazing young Cajun band and arranged by their producer Steve Riley. THE BLUERUNNERS - Nonc Tête Dûre (Uncle Hard Head) [LE GRAND BLEU/ Louisiana Red Hot] One of the more traditional-tinged numbers from the mighty fine "Cajun garage band" from Lafayette, from yet another fine record. THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - Amazing Grace [SPIRIT OF THE CENTURY/RealWorld] "Amazing Grace" sung to the tune of "The House of the Rising Sun". How cool is that? TIM ERIKSEN - Village Churchyard [TIM ERIKSEN/Appleseed] Tim learned this from a recording made by Roscoe Holcomb; it was the last song Roscoe ever performed in public (he gave way to tears and couldn't finish). I heard Tim sing this at a Cordelia's Dad concert at McCabe's a few years back, and it took my breath away. Eight minutes of astonishing unaccompanied singing. CORDELIA'S DAD - Booth Shot Lincoln/Hangman's Reel [COMET/Omnium] We needed an instrumental to ramp down after that last one. What better than one from one of the bands Tim's in, with himself lilting along with the second tune? KEVIN CRAWFORD - Jimmy O'Reilly's/Doonagore/The Bellharbour Reel [IN GOOD COMPANY/Green Linnet] Aptly-titled new release from County Clare (by way of Birmingham, England) flutist surrounds himself with astonishing musicians -- on this set of reels it's Tommy Peoples and Arty McGlynn. ALTAN - Dúlamán [25 YEARS OF CELTIC MUSIC/Green Linnet] New 2-disc set, the first featuring highlights of the label's output from 1976-1996, the second covering up until 2000. Originally from Altan's classic album "Harvest Home". [WRITER'S ALMANAC, with Garrison Keillor] LEE ROY PARNELL - I Declare [TELL THE TRUTH/Vanguard] GREY DELISLE - The Brick [THE SMALL TIME/Hummingbird] NICKEL CREEK - Sweet Afton [NICKEL CREEK/Sugar Hill] WHISKEYTOWN - Don't Wanna Know Why [PNEUMONIA/Lost Highway]
