GILLIAN WELCH - Red Clay Halo [TIME (THE REVELATOR)/Acony] Stunning record, and will likely be in my top five for 2001. SPENCER BOHREN - I Am A Pilgrim [CARRY THE WORD/Zephyr Records] Backed up by the Nott Brothers Vocal Quartet (consisting of himself dubbing the four harmony parts), bluesman Bohren's gospel album is also threatening to land on the year's best list. MELVIN WINE - Tippy Get Your Hair Cut The elder statesman of West Virginia fiddlers. THE RHYTHM RATS - Five Miles to Town [A TRIBUTE TO THE APPALACHIAN STRING BAND MUSIC FESTIVAL, CLIFFTOP, WV/Chubby Dragon] HELENA TRIPLETT - The Vance Song [GREEN ARE THE WOODS/West Virginia Commission on the Arts] Helena is originally from New Zealand, and married West Virginia fiddler/banjoist Jimmy Triplett. She threw herself into the study of the West Virginia ballad singing tradition, and now you'd never know she wasnt' from the mountain. Gorgeous singing. DAN LEVENSON - June Apple [LIGHT OF THE MOON/Buzzard Records] Dan plays with the Boiled Buzzards, and on this solo album performs on fiddle, banjo and fretless banjo. C. J. CHENIER AND THE RED-HOT LOUISIANA BAND - Coochie Coochie Wi'Chou [STEP IT UP!/Alligator Records] Son of the King, and his latest. Music that made a friend of mine say, "If this is what Louisiana is like, I wanna go!" STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - Seems to Me [HAPPYTOWN/Rounder] Dark, funky swamp-pop on this track, which ends with a digital sample of 19th Century "juré" singing, in what the liner notes call "a window inthe world of the 21st Century Cajun." GENO DELAFOSE & FRENCH ROCKIN' BOOGIE - Let's Say Goodnight [THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!/Rounder] Dynamite zydeco cover of the Los Lobos song by David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez. LOS LOBOS DEL ESTE DE LOS ANGELES - Cielito Lindo (Canción mexicana y son huasteco) [JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L.A./Hollywood Records] Their first record from 1977, miraculously unearthed and reissued last year. This classic, which you undoubtedly recognize, is performed in two styles. BRADLEY JAYE WILLIAMS - You Waltzed Away (With My Heart) [TEX-MEX GUMBO/ Lazy S.O.B. Records] Accordionist and mandolinist, formerly in The Movie Stars along with Jill and Michael of Red Meat, and currently leading one of the top conjunto bands in Austin, Los Pinkys. A solo album with both Texas and Louisiana in the pot. LOS PINKYS - El Parrandero (The Carrouser) ESTA PASIÓN/Rounder] See above. RY COODER - The Girls from Texas [BORDERLINE/Warner Bros.] PETER CASE - Something Happens [FLYING SAUCER BLUES/Vanguard] One of my favorite singer-songwriters, the Paul Sanchez of Angeles. :-) PAUL SANCHEZ - Laughable PAUL SANCHEZ - Hey Bartender [SOLD OUT AT CARROLLTON STATION/ Paul Sanchez Music] Two from the Peter Case of New Orleans, one of the finest singer-songwriters in the country (and certainly the best in New Orleans) GUITAR SHORTY - I'm the Clean Up Man [GET WISE TO YOURSELF/Black Top] CHRIS THOMAS KING - Superstitious Blues [ME, MY GUITAR AND THE BLUES/ Blind Pig] You may remember Chris as "Tommy" in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". I think he really did go to that crossroads... DOCK REED and VERA WARD HALL - Didn't That Hammer Ring? [DEEP RIVER OF SONG: ALABAMA FROM LULLABIES TO BLUES/Rounder] Recorded by Alan Lomax in 1940, whose father John described Dock's speaking and singing voice as "deep, vibrant, resonant, tremulous at times -- it always tore at my heart strings, brought chilly sensations along my spine." COREY HARRIS & HENRY BUTLER - Down Home Livin' [vü-dü menz/ Alligator] KERMIT RUFFINS & THE BARBECUE SWINGERS - Some of These Days [1533 ST. PHILIP ST./Basin Street Records] One of New Orleans' finest jazz musicians, modern and traditional. REBIRTH BRASS BAND - Blackbird Special [THE MAIN EVENT: LIVE AT THE MAPLE LEAF/Louisiana Red Hot] Brass band of brass bands, carrying on one of the Crescent City's greatest forms of street music into the new century like nobody else. THE LOUVIN BROTHERS - The Tennessee Waltz [CAPITOL COUNTRY MUSIC CLASSICS: THE LOUVIN BROTHERS/Capitol] THAD COCKRELL & THE STARLITE COUNTRY BAND - He Set Me Free [STACK OF DREAMS/Miles of Music] A gorgeous duet with Caitlin Cary of Whiskeytown. This is shaping up to be one of my two favorite country records of the year. DOLLY PARTON and EMMY ROSSUM - When Love Is New [SONGCATCHER: MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE/Vanguard] This one's "inspired by", a sweet duet between Dolly and the girl who portrayed Deladis, the young traditional singer in the movie. ECK ROBERTSON - Great Big Taters [OLD-TIME TEXAS FIDDLER/County]
