THAD COCKRELL & THE STARLITE COUNTRY BAND - How Far Can I Drive Tonight? [STACK OF DREAMS/Miles of Music] PAUL SANCHEZ - Here I Sit In Prison [SOLD OUT AT CARROLLTON STATION/Paul Sanchez Music] R. L. BURNSIDE - Miss Maybelle [WISH I WAS IN HEAVEN SITTING DOWN/Fat Possum] He may be in his seventies, but he ain't afraid to let the young kids come in and do some scratchin'. LIGHTNING HOPKINS - Whiskey Blues [THE GOLD STAR SESSIONS, VOLUME 2/Arhoolie] VICTORIA SPIVEY - Dirty Tee Bee Blues [BETTER BOOT THAT THING: GREAT WOMEN BLUES SINGERS OF THE 1920s/Bluebird] Terrific compilation, also featuring Alberta Hunter, Jessie Tucker and Ida Mae Mack. WHISTLING ALEX MOORE - Black Eyed Peas and Hog Jowls [FROM NORTH DALLAS TO THE EAST SIDE/Arhoolie] SKARA BRAE - An Cailín Rua (The Red-Haired Girl) [SKARA BRAE/Shanachie] I heard John Tierney play this on LiveIreland.com the other night, and it reminded me that it's one of my favorite Irish-language songs of all time, in particular with this performance full of sparkling harmonies. Skara Brae weren't around for long, but they're still around and influential; their membership consisted of Dáithí Sproule of Derry City (currently in Altan), Mícheál and Tríona Ní Dhomnhaill of The Bothy Band, Relativity and Nightnoise, and their sister Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, all of whom continue to influence Irish music to this day. FISHERSTREET - Brady's/Lough Mountain/Letterkenny Blacksmith [OUT IN THE NIGHT: MUSIC FROM CLARE/Mulligan] PATRICK STREET - The Holy Ground [LIVE FROM PATRICK STREET/Green Linnet] Andy Irvine and Patrick Street are performing tonight at the Town Hall in Galway, Ireland. If you can't make it to that show, check out Andy's upcoming solo show at the An Claidheamh Solius, The Celtic Arts Centre, in the Valley on September 15. This is from their first album, a beautiful song by Gerry O'Beirne. CATHAL HAYDEN, PADDY KEENAN and MARK SIMOS - Sliabh Russell (The Congress Jig)/ The Congress [BOSTON COLLEGE IRISH STUDIES PROGRAM CELEBRATES GAELIC ROOTS/ Kells] Paddy Keenan, former piper of The Bothy Band and "the Jimi Hendrix of the uilleann pipes" will be performing at McCabe's Guitar Shop on September 23. THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - Just Wanna See His Face [SPIRIT OF THE CENTURY/RealWorld] REV. AUBREY GHENT - Walk With Me [CAN'T NOBODY DO ME LIKE JESUS/Arhoolie] One of the amazing "sacred steel" players from the Keith Dominion Holiness- Pentecostal Church in Florida, where for years the main instrument of worship has been the steel guitar. BLIND JESSIE HARRIS - Honey, Take A Whiff On Me [DEEP RIVER OF SONG: ALABAMA FROM LULLABIES TO BLUES/Rounder] Something you don't hear too often these days -- a recording of a black accordion player doing something completely other than zydeco! NATHAN FRAZIER & FRANK PATTERSON - Leather Britches [BLACK FIDDLERS, 1929-1970/Document] VERA WARD HALL, DOCK REED & HENRY REED - Moaning (I'll Soon Be Gone) [DEEP RIVER OF SONG: ALABAMA FROM LULLABIES TO BLUES/Rounder] Recorded 1937-1940 by John Lomax. GILLIAN WELCH & DAVID RAWLINGS - My First Lover [TIME (THE REVELATOR)/Acony] ANDERS OSBORNE - Through and Through [ASH WEDNESDAY BLUES/Shanachie] CHRIS SMITHER - Real Fine Love [ROLLIN' INTO MEMPHIS: SONGS OF JOHN HIATT/Telarc] Various folks like Irma Thomas, C. J. Chenier, Kenny Neal, Cliff Eberhardt and others, taking turns fronting a band led by G. E. Smith on guitars, in this Hiatt tribute album. SAM BUSH - Sailin' Shoes [COOL BLUE ROCKS/Sugar Hill] From a new compilation featuring various bluegrass artists covering songs that started life as rock songs, this one's by Lowell George (of course), in a kicked-up bluegrass style. THE GIBSON BROTHERS - Looking for a Smile in a Heartache [LONG FORGOTTEN DREAM/ Hay Holler] DALE ANN BRADLEY - Cumberland River Dreams [CUMBERLAND RIVER DREAMS/Doobie Shea] THE BLUERUNNERS - Tout Ça Qui Reste (All That's Left) [LE GRAND BLEU/ Louisiana Red Hot] The long-time "garage Cajun" band out of Lafayette; they rock but they can do a nice old-time style waltz with the best of 'em. MILLER'S MERRYMAKERS - Lake Arthur Stomp [RAISE YOUR WINDOW: A CAJUN MUSIC ANTHOLOGY/Country Music Foundation] Recorded February 22, 1937. FILÉ - Shoo, Black [HANG ON TO YOUR CHAPEAU!/Cajun Creole Music] Cover and modern arrangement of Canray Fontenot's old song about trying to shoo Salmas Bertrand's big black hog out of one's yard. C. J. CHENIER & THE RED HOT LOUISIANA BAND - Road Dog [STEP IT UP!/Alligator] MIKE SEEGER - Darling Cora [SOUTHERN BANJO SOUNDS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF STYLE AND TECHNIQUE/Smithsonian-Folkways]
