THE WATERBOYS - Fisherman's Blues [FISHERMAN'S BLUES/Chrysalis] The Waterboys played the El Rey last night. Brilliant. I was very happy when they played this song, which is just pure joy. You shoulda seen the big goofy grin on Mike Scott's face as he played -- piano! -- on this song. How could he not grin? How could we not?!) LUKA BLOOM - Sunny Sailor Boy [TURF/Reprise] Lovely song given to Luka by Mike Scott. ("Mike Scott? Who's that? Friend of yours?") Um no, Mike Scott of the Waterboys. THE CONNACHT RAMBLERS - One Step Ahead of the Storm [THE CONNACHT RAMBLERS/self-released] A little folk trio formed in Sligo, Ireland by Steve Wickham a while back. TOM McRAE - Language of Fools [TOM McRAE/db records-Arista] Tom's an English singer-songwriter who opened for the Waterboys last night, and blew me away. He's hard to genrify -- not folk, but not really rock either. Just very talented. THE WATERBOYS - Further Up Further In [ROOM TO ROAM/Chrysalis] Sweet little Irish-sounding song (incorporating a well-known jig whose title escapes me) and featuring Sharon Shannon on accordion. MAHALIA JACKSON - I Will Move On Up A Little Higher [GOSPELS, SPIRITUALS AND HYMNS/Columbia-Legacy] BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON - John the Revelator [THE COMPLETE BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON/Columbia-Legacy] THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS with KATIE JACKSON - I've Got A Feeling [PASS ME NOT/Arhoolie] Smokin' steel guitar gospel music, from the House of God Holiness Church, Keith Dominion. FRANK STOKES - Chicken You Can Roost Behind the Moon [BEFORE THE BLUES, VOL. 2/Yazoo] A proto-blues minstrel song from this contemporary of Charley Patton, born in Memphis in 1887. ROBERT JOHNSON - Come On In My Kitchen [THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS/ Columbia-Legacy] Maybe Jay Farrar wasn't in St. Louis in the 1920s to hear this song, but you were here to hear it tonight! SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON - Cool, Cool Blues [KING BISCUIT TIME/Arhoolie] Great blues singing and harmonica playing, recorded in Jackson, Mississippi in 1951. AMÉDÉE ARDOIN with DENNIS McGEE - Les blues de Basile [I'M NEVER COMIN' BACK/Arhoolie] One of the classic recordings from Creole accordionist and amazingly soulful singer Ardoin and Cajun fiddler McGee. DEWEY BALFA, MARC SAVOY & D. L. MENARD - Ma Chère Maman Créole (My Sweet Creole Mama) [EN BAS DU CHÊNE VERT/Arhoolie] An old song of Dennis McGee's, performed by this incredible trio on one of the greatest albums of Cajun music ever. MICHAEL DOUCET dit BEAUSOLEIL - Two-Step de Will Bolfa [MICHAEL DOUCET DIT BEAUSOLEIL/Arhoolie] DAVID GREELY - La malheureuse [MORE CAJUN MUSIC AND ZYDECO/Rounder] David's a fiddler and singer with the Mamou Playboys, and learned this beautiful waltz from the playing of the late Lionel LeLeux and Varise Connor (the former recorded rarely, the latter never recorded). THE SAVOY-DOUCET CAJUN BAND - Evangeline Special [HOME MUSIC WITH SPIRITS/ Arhoolie] It was the Savoy Family Cajun Band rather than this ensemble that played a wonderful show at the Getty last Friday; subtract Mike Doucet and add Marc and Ann's sons Joël (fiddle) and Wilson (bass, keyboards, accordion). CHRIS THILE - Eureka! [NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST/Sugar Hill] Amazing new solo album by the virtuoso mandolinist and singer from Nickel Creek. No singing this time (which bums me out a little, as he's got a great voice) but he's saving that for the creek. What we have here are great tunes, brilliantly played. This kid's barely 20 years old, and absolutely smokes. EAST VIRGINIA - Rappahannock [BACK HOME IN EAST VIRGINIA/Copper Creek]' Long-running bluegrass band (since 1969, with varying membership) from Norfolk, VA. DUDLEY CONNELL AND DON RIGSBY - Ballad of Ira Hayes [ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT/Sugar Hill] WALT KOKEN - Old Dusty Miller [HEI-WA HOEDOWN/Rounder] Old-time banjoist, late of the Fat City String Band and the Highwoods String Band. RAKOTO FRAH WITH DAVID LINDLEY - You Done Me Wrong [A WORLD OUT OF TIME: HENRY KAISER AND DAVID LINDLEY IN MADAGASCAR, VOL. 2/Shanachie] Rakoto Frah, the great sodina (metal flute) player of Madagascar, passed away last week. Here's an amazing track, which began while Lindley began picking out on old Ray Price song on his Weissenborn guitar, and Rakoto Frah just chimed in! Fortunately a DAT was rolling, and the result is this beautiful meeting of America and Africa. PETER BLEGVAD - Gold [KING STRUT AND OTHER STORIES/Silvertone] One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite records. JOHN COWAN - Gotta Get Go [JOHN COWAN/Sugar Hill] CHRIS KNIGHT - Send A Boat [A PRETTY GOOD GUY/Dualtone] JOEL R. L. PHELPS - Spokane Motel Blues [REAL: THE TOM T. HALL PROJECT/ Delmore] DR. JOHN - Now That You Got Me [CREOLE MOON/Blue Note] Finishing up with the brand-new FONKY album from Mac!
