SO KALMERY - Africa Tamery [BENDERA/Tinder Records] New music from the Congo, via Paris. FIDDLERS 4 - Danse Caribe [FIDDLERS 4/Compass] They were *brilliant* at Union Station last Sunday. SCOTT MILLER - Virginia Way / Across The Line [I WON'T GO WITH YOU - EP/ Sugar Hill] Rare solo acoustic music from himself of the Commonwealth. There are those who like him this way better than when he's plugged in with the band, and it truly is great stuff. PETER CASE - I Shook His Hand [PETER CASE/Geffen] When I dug this out last week I hadn't heard it in years, and remembered how much I loved it, being Peter's first solo effort post-Plimsouls. We'll be hearing more of it over the next few weeks. JEFF TWEEDY, JAY BENNETT & ROGER McGUINN - James Alley Blues [THE HARRY SMITH CONNECTION: A LIVE TRIBUTE/Smithsonian-Folkways] Originally recorded in New Orleans in the 1920s by Richard "Rabbit" Brown MATTHEW RYAN - Rabbit [CONCUSSION/Waxysilver] A folk song/murder ballad about a different Rabbit, a guy who was the focus of a manhunt in Tennessee last year, then finally emerged and proclaimed his innocence. LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND HIS HOT SEVEN - Potato Head Blues [HOT FIVES AND SEVENS, VOL. 2/JSP] One of the greatest jazz recordings ever, made almost 75 years ago. THE RED STICK RAMBLERS - Tears [THE RED STICK RAMBLERS/LouisianaRadio.com] A sweet old Stephane Grappelli tune. DERRICK SHEZBIE - Paul Barbarin's Second Line [SPODIE'S BACK/Qwest] This guy's grown up playing street jazz in New Orleans, playing with the ReBirth Brass Band, New Birth and other. He made this record 8 years ago at age 19. LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE - Le Reel Irlandais, ou Bees Wax, Skin Sheep [LA MISTRINE/Mille Pattes] A superb tune from my favorite LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE - Sur la Montagne du Loup [Y A BIEN DU CHANGEMENT/ Mille Pattes] BIRÉLI LAGRÈne - Belleville [GYPSY PROJECT/Dreyfus Jazz] UNCLE TUPELO - Still Be Around [89/93: AN ANTHOLOGY/Columbia-Legacy] DOC WATSON with FROSTY MORN - C.
