LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE - Picoro [JUSQU'AUX P'TITES HEURES/Mille Pattes] I'm still oscillating after that fabulous La Bottine show downtown on the 17th. Brilliant, Quebecois "instant happy music." See the web site for the label they started, at http://www.millepattes.com PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND - Where He Leads Me [IN THE SWEET BYE AND BYE/Sony] A gospel set, begun by the PHJB's most recent, all-gospel traditional jazz album. Surprising, and sweet. DOYLE LAWSON AND QUICKSILVER - We Should Walk Together [GOSPEL RADIO GEMS/ Sugar Hill] Posing in front of the WPAQ mikes from Mt. Airy, Doyle brings us bluegrass gospel inspired by his evenings of listening to the Opry. SONS OF THE SAN JOAQUIN - In the Sweet Bye and Bye [GOSPEL TRAILS/Shanachie] Cowboy gospel, with Dale Evans guesting on vocals on this track. THE BLASTERS - Marie Marie [AMERICAN MUSIC/Hightone] Classic. Recently reissued, and mostly unavailable since 1980. And the cover photo was taken at KCSN in 1979! THE BLAZERS - Tiburon Tiburon [SHORT FUSE/Rounder] Just *another* band from East L.A., and these guys are terrific too. TISH HINOJOSA - Manos Huesos y Sangre [AQUELLA NOCHE/Watermelon] Recorded live in Austin in 1991; a sweet ballad about the painter Frida Kahlo. THE IGUANAS - Para Donde Vas [THE IGUANAS/Margaritaville-MCA] An old favorite from this New Orleans-based Latin/N.O. R&B/ Mexican traditional band, from their lamentably unavailable debut (Margaritaville went belly-up) CORDELIA'S DAD - The Frozen Girl [COMET/Omnium] One of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Bundle up. BOZIE STURDEVANT - Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down [A TREASURY OF LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS/Rounder] Wow. Recorded live during a gospel service in Mississippi in 1942. COREY HARRIS - High Fever Blues [FISH AIN'T BITIN'/Alligator] New country blues, from one of my favorites of last year BIG MACEO - County Jail Blues [THE KING OF CHICAGO BLUES PIANO/Arhoolie] This record has a great sound to it, almost as if I was listening to it on an old 1930 Philco console (and the playing's great too). JAMES P. JOHNSON - Gypsy Blues [CAROLINA SHOUT/Biograph] King of the stride piano. Man, could this guy play. I wasn't familiar with him until recently, but now I can't get enough. THE NEW ORLEANS RAGTIME ORCHESTRA - Winin' Boy Blues [CREOLE BELLES/Arhoolie] Finishin' up the set with a Jelly Roll Morton tune. ALTAN - Flood in the Holm/Scots Mary/The Dancer's Denial [RUNAWAY SUNDAY/ Virgin] Digressing as I will into Ireland, particularly 'cause they'll be in Pasadena at the Neighborhood Church on 8/24. Go! DAVY SPILLANE - Atlantic Bridge [ATLANTIC BRIDGE/Tara] This record from ex-Moving Hearts piper Spillane blew me away when it first came out 8 or so years ago. Featuring Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck on this track. JOE DERRANE - Dever the Dancer/Come Upstairs With Me/Kid on the Mountain [THE TIE THAT BINDS/Shanachie] Boston-born of Irish parents, and a terrific box player. UNCLE TUPELO - True to Life [STILL FEEL GONE/Rockville] BILLY BRAGG & WILCO - Ingrid Bergman [MERMAID AVENUE/Elektra] Who knew Woody'd write a song about wanting to shag Ingrid Bergman? (As Billy put it during a recent show) THE FOREMEN - Ain't No Liberal [FOLK HEROES/Reprise] Funny, folky, political ... just like I like it. PETER HOLSAPPLE & SUSAN COWSILL - A Song For You [CONMEMORATIVO/Rhino] From a tribute album to Gram Parsons BEAUSOLEIL - Eunice Two-Step [L'AMOUR OU LA FOLIE/Rhino] Traditional song from their most recent album. AUSTIN PITRE - Zydeco Sont Pas Sale [OPELOUSAS WALTZ/Arhoolie] The song that gave the genre its name, in a live performance recorded at a dance near Ville Platte in 1971. COTEAU - Arc de Triomphe Two-Step [HIGHLY SEASONED CAJUN MUSIC/Rounder] A redo of a signature Coteau tune in its first recording since 1977 (when Coteau broke up, and the similarly-lined-up proto-Beausoleil did it). DAVID LINDLEY AND WALLY INGRAM - New Minglewood Blues [TWANGO BANGO DELUXE/ Ulftone Music] Newest all-acoustic album from Mr. Dave, this time on a weird German label and not his own beloved Pleemhead. New percussionist Ingram has a whole setup, but still whacks his instruments with his hands more so than sticks. Mr. Dave is as amazing as ever. Leading us up into Sarcastic Deadhead and The Grateful Dead Hour... |
