CORDELIA'S DAD - Texas Rangers [HOW CAN I SLEEP?/Omnium] Traditional song, electric version. Butt-kickin'. GILLIAN WELCH - The Devil Had a Hold On Me [HELL AMONG THE YEARLINGS/Almo] Boy, do I love this record. It grows on me more every day. And it's so friggin' anti-commercial too -- she just did what she wanted, and it's great. BRUCE ROBISON (duet with CHARLIE ROBISON) - Rayne, Louisiana [WRAPPED/ Lucky Dog] I hadn't heard Bruce until a friend of mine turned me on to him while we were driving to Clifftop. Excellent stuff. JUNIOR BROWN - Peelin' Taters [LONG WALK BACK/Curb] A totally wacked guit-steel instrumental from the new album. I'm gonna start collecting songs with "tater" in the title. DOC AND MERLE WATSON - Solid Gone [DOWN SOUTH/Sugar Hill] Sweeter pickin' you won't find. DOCK BOGGS - Sammie, Where Have You Been So Long? [COUNTRY BLUES/Revenant] From the fabulous reissue on John Fahey's excellent label; the complete early recordings 1927-29. GENO DELAFOSE AND FRENCH ROCKIN' BOOGIE - J'vas Jamais La Voir Encore (I'll Never See Her Again) [LA CHANSON PERDUE/Rounder] Geno's got it. John would be proud. Buy his record and maybe people will start to realize that modern zydeco isn't just modern R&B with a rubboard and accordion. JOHN DELAFOSE AND THE EUNICE PLAYBOYS - Co-Fé? [JOE PETE GOT TWO WOMEN/ Arhoolie] Classic zydeco with a strong Creole traditional base. Hardly anybody's doing this anymore. LISA HALEY AND THE ZYDEKATS - Madame Sostain [WAITING FOR THE SKY/Blue Fiddle] Soulful version of the traditional Cajun waltz; modern but with proper reverence for the tradition. Lisa, the lady with the blue fiddle, is local to L.A. Clifton Chenier once said of her, "She plays just as good as a man!" BOIS-SEC ARDOIN with BALFA TOUJOURS - Jongle a Moi (Think of Me) [ALLONS DANSER/Rounder] The Creole tradition lives on with Bois-Sec, still recording at 82, and with those in the younger generation that learn from him. AIMÉ GAGNON - Le Reel de Queteux Tremblay [VIOLONEUX D'ORIGINE/Gagnon CD] A very independent release of traditional Quebecois fiddling, by the children of the fiddler. Marvelous stuff. Gagnon learned this tune from Tremblay, a wandering beggar who always travelled up and down the St. Lawrence River, fiddle in hand, and always stopped to play with Aime'. JETER LE PONT - Isabeau s'y Promène/Le Reel du Cowboy Perdu [L'ESCAPADE/ Minuit dans la Cuisine] Quebecois traditional trio, produced by Andre Marchand, formerly of La Bottine Souriante. An ancient song from France, which has also found its way into the Cajun ballad repertoire, followed by a tune learned from the playing of Aime' Gagnon. GABRIEL LABBE AND PHILIPPE BRUNEAU - La Marche des Touristes [MASTERS OF FRENCH CANADIAN MUSIC 3/Folkways LP] Harmonica, accompanied by piano. Altan are performing this coming Sunday, so here's a set to help convince folks to go. I gave them official permission to miss my show that night, since they're going on at the same time, but did require them to listen in the car on the way over, and encouraged them to tape it at home. :) ALTAN - Tommy Peoples/The Windmill/Fintan McManus' [ISLAND ANGEL/Green Linnet] ALTAN - A Bhean Udai Thall [HORSE WITH A HEART/Green Linnet] ALTAN - Paddy's Trip to Scotland/Dinky's/The Shetland Fiddler [ALTAN LIVE/ Green Linnet] Another set featuring folks I saw at Clifftop ... THE NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS - Crow Black Chicken THE VOLO BOGTROTTERS - The Crow Song [THE YOUNG FOGIES, VOLUME II/Rounder] THE ILL-MO BOYS - 9th of January [A TRIBUTE TO THE APPALACHIAN STRING BAND MUSIC FESTIVAL/Chubby Dragon] WALT KOKEN - Whiskey [FINGER LAKES RAMBLE/Mudthumper Music] THE MOVIE STARS - Misconceptions [HECK-OLA!/Lucky Pierre] The greatest roots-rock-country-Cajun-polka-surf-conjunto- chickenscratch-etc band of all time. BRAVE COMBO - La Negra [HUMANSVILLE/Rounder] Denton, Texas' finest. CONJUNTO ALMA DE MATZINGAN - La Pipa Dina (The Marijuana Truck) [ARRIBA! TIERRA CALIENTE/Arhoolie] Conjunto music from Michoacan, which is like mariachi withouth the horns. Lots of pot-smuggling tales have worked their way into the local folklore and corrido repertoire. MAS MAMONES - El Songo de Hector [AGUACERO Y PARRANDA/Concojones Records] A Cuban-style band based in New Orleans. Caliente! NORMAN BLAKE - Hand Me Down My Walking Cane [WHISKEY BEFORE BREAKFAST/ Rounder LP] A terrific record featuring just vocals and guitar. My first NB album, too. PETER OSTROUSHKO - The Last Stand [SLUZ-DUZ MUSIC/Rounder LP] OSSIAN - Johnny Todd/Far From Home [LIGHT ON A DISTANT SHORE/Iona] |
