THE V-ROYS - Virginia Way/Shenandoan Breakdown TOMMY JARRELL with KYLE CREED - The Wreck of the Old 97 [JUNE APPLE/] THE OLD 97s - Indefinitely [FIGHT SONGS/Elektra] STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - All For the Better [BAYOU RULER/Rounder] Some folks in Acadiana were skeptical over Steve's foray into Swamp Pop, but after a few listens and a bunch of great live performances, PLUS his formidable chops as a member of the new Lil' Band of Gold with Swamp Pop maestro Warren Storm, Steve definitely has the chops for this. HADACOL - Better Than This [BETTER THAN THIS/Checkered Past] Engaging twangy rock band, named after good ol' Dudley LeBlanc's patent medicine. TERRY ALLEN - Southern Comfort [SALIVATION/Sugar Hill] CLARENCE "GATEMOUTH" BROWN - Tippin' In [/Sugar Hill] REV. GARY DAVIS - Samson & Delilah (If I Had My Way) [REV. GARY DAVIS LIVE AT NEWPORT/Vanguard] LONNIE PITCHFORD - Louisiana Blues By request. COREY HARRIS - Eh La Bas [GREENS FROM THE GARDEN/Alligator] THE WILD MAGNOLIAS - Life is a Carnival [LIFE IS A CARNIVAL/Metro Blue] Mardi Gras Indians on a major label ... who'd'a thunk it? This is the most satisfying Indian album in years. Big Chief Bo Dollis sounds as great as ever, and with folks like Dr. John and Marva Wright (as well as Robbie Robertson and, of all people, Bruce Hornsby on this track) lending their talents, this is one great big fun Mardi Gras party. The guitarist in the Magnolias' backup band, Japanese-born June Yamagishi, is astonishing. THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Over Africa [VALENCE STREET/Sony] The Nevilles' most satisfying album since "Yellow Moon", "Valence" is named for the Uptown New Orleans street where the brothers grew up. BOOZOO CHAVIS - Ay, Cayenne [WHO STOLE MY MONKEY?/Rounder] Pushing 70 and still going strong (he could wear me out at his performances, and has), Boozoo's primarily responsible for the vast majority of the young zydeco bands today as their primary influence. D. L. MENARD - C'est Just Les Anges Qu'apres Pleurer (It's Just That The Angels are Crying) [CAJUN MEMORIES/Swallow] THE MAGNOLIA SISTERS - Tasso [PRENDS COURAGE/Arhoolie] Debut album from the self-described "all-girl Cajun band"; from their Jazzfest performance I can tell you that they're getting better and better. CORY McCAULEY - Evangeline Playboys Special BEAUSOLEIL - Zarico Boogie [CAJUNIZATION/Rhino] LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE - Ciel d'Automne [XIEME/Disques Mille Pattes] Beautiful tune composed by their astonishingly talented new fiddle player, 21-year-old Andre Brunet. TARA NEVINS - Lee Highway Blues [MULE TO RIDE/Sugar Hill] Tara steps aside from Donna the Buffalo to give us a terrific album of old-time music, plus a couple of new songs of her own. Ralph Stanley, Dirk Powell, John Herrmann, Jim Miller and more help out. JOHN COHEN - The Story That The Crow Told Me [STORIES THE CROW TOLD ME: A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF OLD-TIME MUSIC/Acoustic Disc] Banjo player, founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers and much more, playing along with "Uncle John's Band", AKA Jody Stecher, David Grisman and Sue Draheim. TOM, BRAD AND ALICE - Cider [BEEN THERE STILL/Copper Creek] That's Sauber, Leftwich and Gerrard, in case you didn't know. REBECCA TARWATER - Barbara Allen [ANGLO-AMERICAN BALLADS, VOLUME 1/Rounder] Unaccompanied, shortened version of a Child ballad, recorded in 1936 by this singer from Rockwood, Tennessee SALAMANDER CROSSING - What Kind of Person? [BOTTLENECK DREAMS/Signature Sounds] TIM & MOLLIE O'BRIEN - Wichita A Gillian Welch song, recorded in '94. The liner notes are funny: "Gillian's new to Nashville, but I'll bet you'll be hearing more from her in the years to come." Uh huh. :^) J. D. CROWE & THE NEW SOUTH - White Freightliner [COME ON DOWN TO MY WORLD/ Rounder] A Townes Van Zandt song. BOBBY OSBORNE, DAVID GRISMAN, RONNIE McCOURY - Ashokan Farewell [BLUEGRASS MANDOLIN EXTRAVAGANZA/Acoustic Disc] MOONSHINE WILLY - Jackson Leading into the hardcore country of "Classic Heartland" ... |
