JELLY ROLL MORTON TRIO - Wolverine Blues [JOHNNY DODDS: ORIGINAL PERFORMANCES 1923-1929/Louisiana Red Hot] The great New Orleanian clarinetist was also in Jelly Roll's group for a while ...what a combination. LOUIS ARMSTRONG - Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen [VERVE SILVER COLLECTION/Verve] Incredibly gorgeous and moving vocal from Louis, recorded 1957. Vocal and trumpet from Louis, with guitar and orchestra accompaniment. BRUCE DAIGREPONT - Le Diable est Lâché [PARADIS/Rounder] Long-awaited, and brand-new! This bluesy, spooky song is one of several original songs, plus two Clifton Chenier covers, one Amedee Ardoin song and a traditional tune. Hits the stores on Tuesday. COURTNEY GRANGER - Le Two-Step des Festivals Acadiens [UN BAL CHEZ BALFA/Rounder] An original song from the 16-year-old great-nephew of Dewey Balfa, produced by Dirk Powell. This kid's amazing, and his heart and soul have been quite literally touched by his Nonc Dewey. DENNIS McGEE with MICHAEL DOUCET - Le Reel de Barza [THE MAD REEL/Arhoolie] The late great McGee, who was in his 90s when he recorded this, on leadfiddle and vocals, with Michael on twin fiddle. MICHAEL DOUCET - Madame Sosthène [THE MAD REEL/Arhoolie] Solo voice and fiddle version, from the opening titles of the soundtrack of the film "Belizaire the Cajun" LEO SOILEAU & MOISE ROBIN - Je Veux Marier [THE EARLY RECORDINGS OF LEO SOILEAU/Yazoo] Late 20s recording of fiddler Soileau (pronounced "swallow") and accordionist/singer Robin (roughly pronounced "mo-EESE" "ro-BAhn", "a" like in "hat") TONY FURTADO & DIRK POWELL - The Roscommon Reel/O'Rourke's/The Famous Ballymote [TONY FURTADO & DIRK POWELL/Rounder] Three Irish tunes on various guitars and banjos from this terrific, eclectic batch of instrumental American roots music. TIM O'BRIEN - Ireland's Green Shore [THE CROSSING/Alula] Tim's exploration of his own (and his music's) Irish roots. This song was learned from the singing of Maggie Hammons of W. Virginia, which Tim cites as a perfect example of how Celtic music was "frozen" in Appalachia. KÍLA - The Siege of Carrickfinn International Airport (Humphrey Goggles/ Ard na gCaorach) [TOG E GO BOG E/Green Linnet] Two solo pipe tunes written and performed by Kíla's piper Eoin Dillon. ANDERS OSBORNE - Boxes, Bills and Pain [LIVING ROOM/Shanachie] Brilliant "cosmic blues" from this New Orleans-based singer/guitarist (who's originally from Sweden) RY COODER - Bourgeois Blues [CHICKEN SKIN MUSIC/Warner] The old Leadbelly song, with Ry on mandola, bajo sexto and Cajun accordion PEE WEE CRAYTON - Red Rose Boogie [EARLY HOUR BLUES/Blind Pig] From his last recordings; this song was written by his wife, Esther KAZUHIRO INABA - I Wish You Knew [DIXIE DREAM/Copper Creek] An album of excellent bluegrass from a Japanese singer and picker. Bluegrass is everywhere! SAND MOUNTAIN - Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone? [MOLLY ROSE/Hay Holler] These guys seem to have a talent for taking songs from other genres and doing them bluegrass-style, so well that you wonder why they weren't done that way in the first place. ROSCOE HOLCOMB - East Virginia Blues [MOUNTAIN MUSIC OF KENTUCKY/Smithsonian Folkways] High and lonesome and brilliant. One of many versions of this old song in my library. MIKE SEEGER & PAUL BROWN - Make Me a Pallet [WAY DOWN IN NORTH CAROLINA/ Rounder] Songs and tunes from N.C., played on everything from banjo to dulcimer to jaw harp. FRANK PROFFITT - Cumberland Gap [HIGH ATMOSPHERE/Rounder] Recorded in Vilas, N.C. in 1965. GRATEFUL DEAD - Cumberland Blues [WORKINGMAN'S DEAD/Warner Bros.] Some people look at me funny when I say that the Grateful Dead played American roots music. Just listen this and then try to argue. GILLIAN WELCH - Annabelle [REVIVAL/Almo] Bliss. ACCIDENT CLEARINGHOUSE - In Heaven There Is No Beer [BY BLOOD AND MARRIAGE/ OBT] Great country 'n western honkytonk hillbilly swing from Minneosta. http://www.accidentclearinghouse.com CAFÉ TACUBA - Ojalá Que Llueva Café [AVALANCHE DE EXITOS/WEA Latina] Fantastic trad-Mexican-style cover of Juan Luis Guerra's merengue hit. These guys have a new double CD due out soon. DON SANTIAGO JIMENEZ - Ay Te Dejo En San Antonio [HIS FIRST AND LAST RECORDINGS: 1937 & 1979/Arhoolie] A classic which I first heard performed by Los Lobos about 15 years ago. From his last '79 recordings, with his son Flaco. TRIO DE MANDINGA - La Guacamaya [LA IGUANA: SONES JAROCHOS DE VERACRUZ, MEXICO/Corason] Another one I first learned from Los Lobos; I'm now a huge fan of sones jarochos. LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE - Yoyo-Verret [XIEME/Mille Pattes] A contender for Album of the Year. PIERRE SCHRYER - Reel du Pendu (The Hanged Man's Reel) [NEW CANADIAN WALTZ/ New Canadian Records] One of my all-time favorite fiddle tunes, originally from Quebec. JEAN CARIGNAN - Reel Gaspésien [MUSICIENS TRADITIONELLES QUEBECOIS: JEAN CARIGNAN/Patrimoine] A tune from the Gaspe peninsula from the legendary Quebecois fiddler. ROSIE FLORES - Funnel of Love [DANCE HALL DREAMS/Rounder] Rosie's newest blast of honky-tonk. DALE ANN BRADLEY - Stuck in the Middle With You [OLD SOUTHERN PORCHES/ Pinecastle] Dale Ann always seems to include, among her own wonderful songs, at least one really neat and unexpected cover.Sources:
